HIVE Graphics finish
Many years ago, in the motocross industry, graphics design and production were quite simple, but as technology progressed, so did the options for finishes and effects. Today, we want to take you behind the scenes to explain how these graphics are made, layered, and finished to create stunning visuals that last.
Graphics production process
The process begins with printing the design onto a high-quality vinyl or film base material. This base serves as the foundation for your graphic. Once printed, the next crucial step is lamination.
Lamination involves applying a clear vinyl layer over the printed design. This isn’t just for looks—it provides essential protection against scratches, UV rays, and general wear and tear. The lamination layer also adds thickness, giving the graphic a more durable, premium feel. Think of it as a shield that keeps your artwork vibrant and intact, even in the roughest racing conditions.
History
In the past, motocross graphics mainly featured two types of lamination finishes. The most common was gloss lamination, which produces a shiny, reflective surface that makes colors pop. This was the standard for most racing kits until the early 2000s.
The second option was matte lamination, which offers a smooth, non-reflective finish. It’s favored for its understated, clean look and reduced glare under sunlight. During that period, these were the only options available—simple but effective.
Evolution of Graphic finishes
As the industry evolved, so did the possibilities. A few years ago, we started working with APA to introduce textured and holographic finishes that add new dimensions to your graphics. Today, we’re excited to present one of our latest innovations: HIVE lamination.
Introducing HIVE
So, what is HIVE? It’s a gloss finish with a twist. It features a subtle honeycomb pattern that creates a textured surface, combined with a holographic holochrome effect. This pattern catches the light in mesmerizing ways, giving your graphics a vibrant, dynamic appearance.
Versatility and application
One of the best parts? HIVE can be combined with any of our base materials—white, fluorescent, or dark colors. Previously, creating holographic effects with white or fluo colors was challenging, but HIVE makes it possible, and the results are stunning.
Just look at the new DRZ we built with this finish—clean lines, eye-catching effects, and an overall modern look that really stands out.
